Guest Post: Our Absolutely Wild Weekend Away

Recently, I had the pleasure of embarking on an Absolutely Wild weekend away on the R62 with some friends. We loved seeing the buffaloes, checking out the glamping tents, visiting the infamous Ronnie’s Sex Shop, the kid’s play area, and the hot tub.

Day One – Friday

On Friday, we visited Ronnie’s Sex Shop, arrived at the farm, had lunch, and slept soundly.

Ronnie’s Sex Shop

We and our friends left just after 1 pm on Friday and met up at the bar for an ice-cold beer. My wife and her friend had a Savannah Lite. Astoundingly enough, it seemed as if every drink cost R50. The drinks were affordable and hit the spot on a lovely summer’s day.

After the pit stop, we headed to Absolutely Wild. The owner was kind enough to leave the gate open for us. Upon arrival, we received a WhatsApp with each unit’s wifi password, how the solar electricity worked, and more.

Dinner

Once we had unpacked, we met at the second cottage. It was quite warm, so the children jumped into the hot tub – or “cold tub” – the owner had left it unheated since it was such a warm day. We had some snacks and a drink or two, then braaied an awesome piece of rump steak and made the famous “plankie steak”, where you braai the steak without any spices, cut it up, and then salt and spice the incisions.

After dinner, we ended up making a few s’mores, which the kids adored. We melted marshmallows and stuffed them between Marie biscuits.

That night, we slept soundly, relishing the quiet of the Klein Karoo.

Day Two – Saturday

The kids were up and about early on Saturday morning, exploring and running around the farm with big smiles. For breakfast, we made bacon, scrambled eggs, and toasted bread in the pan so it was crispy and hot.

Soon after, we went for a walk to see the glamping tents. Unfortunately, they were still under construction, but it was great to get a glimpse of what they’ll look like.

We also got to see the ginormous play park, which was also under construction – this didn’t put off the kids, who were given 30 minutes of playtime.

Lunch

After our farm walkabout, we chatted and then napped for an hour under the cool aircon in the bedrooms. The children kept themselves busy running around the hills surrounding the cottages, enjoying freedom from the walls and gates they were so accustomed to. For lunch, we braaied hearty boerewors for rolls.

Feeding the Buffaloes

Around 3:30 p.m., we were invited to feed the buffaloes – animals on the farm. What an experience! They were so close to the vehicle that you could almost reach out and touch them. We also got to see a baby buffalo born on Christmas Day (around two months old).

For supper, we made a decent fire and had ostrich burgers with various sauces. The night was clear – we were lucky enough to see many more stars than you would in the city.

Day Three – Sunday

On Sunday morning, we packed up while having hot coffee and rusks. Then, we rode to Diesel and Crème for their famous decadent milkshakes.

We had a great time visiting the farm and would be glad to go again!
